The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) offers a catalog of interactive and experiential trainings and workshops designed to increase participants’ knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the selected topic in efforts to strengthen Washington University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Our staff work with requestors to best tailor each offering to meet participant needs.

The types of training we offer include:
Managing Unconscious Bias
Unconscious Bias describes the automatic association people make between groups of people and stereotypes about those groups. The first step towards impacting unconscious bias is awareness. This training will introduce participants to the concept of unconscious bias, challenge them to recognize the many ways bias seeps into their behavior, and finally how to develop tools to manage bias and its impact.
Culture, Values, and Communication
Culture shapes our attitudes and behaviors. Different cultural contexts can bring communication challenges to groups, organizations, and the workplace. Effective communication begins with recognizing one’s own cultural norms, how that aligns with personal values, and how this leads to the expectations of others. In this training, participants will explore their cultural norms, identify areas of hidden bias influenced by those norms, and how to start unpacking those biases to create a better understanding of working across cultural differences.
Cultivating Brave Spaces for Dialogue
A brave space is a space where participants feel comfortable learning, sharing, and growing. These spaces create supportive environments so that all participants may equally participate in challenging dialogue. Cultivating these spaces requires the ability to understand and explore our personal learning edges. This training will introduce Tom Senninger’s Learning Zone model and challenge participants to explore their comfort and discomfort as it comes to dialogue, challenging conversations, and uncomfortable situations. Participants will begin on their journey of developing new learning paths that lead to expanding their comfort zone(s) to create brave spaces of learning.
Social Identity and Leadership
We are all complex beings that hold multiple social identities. Our social identities influence the ways that we walk through the world. In this training, participants will be introduced to the concept of social identity, identify their social identities, and critically reflect on how those identities impact their experiences and those of others with shared and/or different identities. This training is great for student leaders.
