What does it mean to be socially just? How can I work towards being a more understanding and knowledgeable member of the WUSTL community? Where can I develop the skills to create positive change on and off campus?
All of these questions can be answered for you through the Socially Just Leadership Institute! The Socially Just Leadership Institute (SJLI) is an intensive, co-curricular experience bridging the gaps between leadership education, professional development, and social justice engagement.
SJLI invites participants from the WUSTL community to come together and explore the intersections of leadership and social justice. This program is open to all undergraduate students with no expectation of prior knowledge of social justice issues or previous leadership experiences; we all are here to learn more about our impact within the world around us, no matter our individual identities. The Socially Just Leadership Institute consists of two main aspects: A workshop series and a capstone trip during Spring Break.
The workshop series will:
Occur on three Saturday afternoons in the Spring semester
Be facilitated by various faculty and staff members from across the University
Cover topics including, but not limited to:
Current issues and hot topics
Educate participants to think critically of systemic change
At the end of that workshop series, all participants will go on a trip to Chicago, Illinois for three days/two nights to meet socially just leaders making impacts in the communities they strive to support.
SJLI is a FREE program for all participants
This includes the costs for:
Activities during the workshop series
Transportation during the capstone trip
Lodging in Downtown Chicago
Lunch and dinner for each day during the trip
Various activities within the city of Chicago.
The only requirement for SJLI is to attend all workshops and participate fully; you must attend all workshops to participate in the capstone trip. Due to financial stipulations, we are only accepting 30 participants.
The application goes live on Friday, Nov. 1 and will close on Friday, Nov. 22 at 11:59 p.m.. We will send all participant information on Tuesday, Nov. 25. You will have until Monday, Dec. 2 to accept your spot in the Institute; selected students who cancel their registration after that date will incur a cancellation fee charged to your WUSTL student account.
All registrants outside of those first 30 will be placed on a waitlist. If students drop out of the program prior to the first workshop, waitlisted students will be placed in the order that applications were received. To register, go to https://washucampuslife.typeform.com/to/liq1DD
