Sumers Fitness Center

  1. Proper athletic attire must be worn while participating in the activity areas.
  2. Closed-toed athletic shoes are required at all times.
  3. Disinfect and wipe down all equipment thoroughly after use.
  4. Re-rack all plates, dumbbells and other equipment when you are finished using it. Do not leave loose plates or dumbbells on the floor. Unused equipment should always be properly racked.
  5. Use lock collars on all load-bearing barbell exercises.
  6. Do not drop weights on the floor.
  7. Only bumper plates are permitted on the Olympic platforms.
  8. When performing overhead lifts on the Olympic platforms, control the bar and maintain contact with it whenever possible.
  9. Powdered chalk is prohibited.
  10. Spitting on the floor or in the drinking fountains is prohibited.
  11. Backpacks and other personal items are not permitted in activity areas. Store all belongings in or on top of temporary lockers. WashU Rec is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings.
  12. Glass bottles and open containers are prohibited in the facility. Only plastic bottles and beverage containers with lids are permitted.
  13. Water is the only beverage permitted. Other beverages such as sports drinks, protein shakes, smoothies, and pre or post-workout drinks are not permitted.
  14. Food of any kind is not permitted in activity areas.
  15. Report equipment damage or any facility-related injuries to a facility host.
  16. Personal training and private lessons are not permitted in the facility unless properly arranged through WashU Rec.
  17. Alcohol and use of tobacco products is prohibited in the facility.
  18. Photography and filming are not permitted in the facility without approval from the WashU Rec administrative staff.
  19. Recreation staff members have the final say in policy interpretation and enforcement. Failure to comply with any of these policies may result in temporary or permanent loss of recreation privileges.

Rec Courts

  1. Proper athletic attire must be worn while participating in activity areas. Shirts, shoes, and pants/shorts are required. Sports bras are not considered a shirt.
  2. Non-marking athletic shoes with clean soles are required for using the courts.
  3. Exercise good sportsmanship. Fighting, kicking balls, unruly conduct, profanity, and rough play will not be tolerated and will be grounds for removal from the facility.
  4. Food of any kind is not permitted on the courts.
  5. Dunking is permitted, but hanging on the rim or net is prohibited.
  6. Kicking soccer/futsal balls is prohibited on the Rec Courts, except for in intramural play.
  7. Do not attempt to raise/lower baskets or partition curtains, remove volleyball/ badminton nets, or move any other equipment. Contact a facility host for assistance.
  8. Outdoor sports, including throwing Frisbees and footballs, are prohibited on the Rec Courts.
  9. Spitting on the courts or in the drinking fountains is prohibited.
  10. Backpacks and other personal items are not permitted on or around the courts. Store all belongings in or in front of temporary lockers. WashU Rec is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings.
  11. Glass bottles and open containers are prohibited in the facility. Only plastic bottles and beverage containers with lids are permitted.
  12. Report equipment damage or any facility-related injuries to a facility host.
  13. When courts are in demand, participants should use a waiting system that allows other individuals to play in.
  14. Recreation programs, including intramural sports, have priority use of the courts.
  15. Photography and filming are not permitted in the facility without approval from the WashU Rec administrative staff.
  16. Recreation staff members have the final say in policy interpretation and enforcement. Failure to comply with any of these policies may result in temporary or permanent loss of recreation privileges.

Elevated Track

  1. Proper athletic attire must be worn in the studio.
  2. Closed-toed athletic shoes are required at all times. Spiked shoes are not permitted.
  3. Please adhere to the posted running direction and lane assignments. Slower walkers and runners should stay to the inside allowing faster runners to pass on the outside.
  4. Stretching, sitting, and spectating are not permitted inside track lanes. A stretching cage is available in the south alcove.
  5. Throwing or dropping items from the track is prohibited.
  6. Spitting on the track or in the drinking fountain is prohibited.
  7. Backpacks and other personal items are not permitted on the floor. Store all belongings in temporary lockers. WashU Rec is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings.
  8. Glass bottles and open containers are prohibited in the facility. Only plastic bottles and beverage containers with lids are permitted.
  9. Food of any kind is not permitted. Only water is allowed. Group workouts of three or more individuals are prohibited.
  10. Personal training and private lessons are not permitted in the facility unless properly arranged through WashU Rec.

Studio 1904

  1. Proper athletic attire must be worn in the studio. Shirts and pants/shorts are required. Sports bras are not considered a shirt.
  2. Shoes must be non-marking.
  3. The Studio 1904 audio system may only be controlled by WashU Rec staff.
  4. Disinfect and wipe down all equipment thoroughly after use.
  5. Backpacks and other personal items are not permitted on the floor. Store all belongings in temporary lockers. WashU Rec is not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings.
  6. Glass bottles and open containers are prohibited. Only plastic bottles and beverage containers with lids are permitted.
  7. Food of any kind is not permitted. Only water is allowed.
  8. Headphones must be worn when using portable electronic devices.
  9. Group workouts of five or more individuals are prohibited.
  10. Studio doors must remain open when not in use for a BearFit class.
  11. Dropping weights on the hardwood floor is prohibited.
  12. All equipment must be returned to its proper location.
  13. Do not place hands, feet, or equipment on or against the mirrors.
  14. WashU Rec staff members have the final say in policy interpretation and enforcement. Failure to comply with any of these policies may result in temporary or permanent loss of recreation privileges.

Outdoor Facilities

Francis Olympic Field

Field Access is Prioritized as follows

  1. Washington University Varsity team practices and competitions. Times may vary based on weather.
  2. Washington University Recreation and Physical Education programs, including sport clubs,
    intramural sports and classes.
  3. Sumers Recreation Center Members.

Access to Francis Olympic Field is controlled through the Sumers Recreation Center. When a Washington University varsity team arrives at the facility, other individuals or groups may be asked to leave the facility in order to accommodate the varsity team’s needs. Your cooperation with this request is appreciated.

FRANCIS Olympic FIELD POLICIES

  1. Private and/or group lessons are strictly prohibited without express written authorization from the Washington University Athletic Department.
  2. Bikes, skateboards, roller blades or any activities that may cause damage to the fields and/or track are strictly prohibited.
  3. Track and playing fields not available for recreation during varsity practice or competition.
    Jogging is restricted to lanes 5-8.
  4. Spiked and cleated shoes are not permitted.
  5. Gum, sunflower seeds, candy, and glass containers are prohibited. Food and beverages are restricted to grandstand.
  6. Alcohol and use of tobacco products is prohibited in all areas.
  7. Weather conditions may prevent use of facilities.
  8. Users are expected to practice good sportsmanship at all times.
  9. Policies are subject to change. Violation of rules may result in the loss of access to the facility.

Tao Tennis Center

COURT ACCESS IS PRIORITIZED AS FOLLOWS

  1. Washington University Varsity tennis practice and competition (times may vary based on weather).
  2. WashU Recreation and Physical Education programs, including sport clubs, intramural sports and classes.
  3. Students, staff, and faculty.

When a Washington University Varsity tennis team arrives at the courts, recreational users may be asked to leave the facility or change their court location to accommodate the varsity practice needs. Your cooperation with this request is appreciated.

TENNIS CENTER POLICIES

  1. Private and/or group lessons are strictly prohibited without express written authorization from the Washington University Athletic Department.
  2. Courts are for tennis play only. Bikes, skateboards, roller blades, or any activities that may cause damage to the surface are strictly prohibited.
  3. No soccer ball play (could cause damage to the nets).
  4. Players are expected to practice good sportsmanship at all times.
  5. Food and beverages are restricted to the bleacher area only. Glass containers, alcoholic
    beverages and tobacco products are prohibited.
  6. Weather conditions may prevent the use of the facility.
  7. These policies are subject to change. Violation of rules may result in the loss of access to the facility.

All Facilities

Minors/Dependents Policy

For risk management reasons, minors (under age 18) are not permitted access to indoor recreation facilities except for special event family days.

Disciplinary Protocols

Incident #1: Disciplinary Meeting with Professional Staff & Potential Suspension of Facility Privileges

If a recreational user is not complying with facility policies and has demonstrated a repeated pattern of similar behavior after being approached by a member of our staff, an in-person meeting will be scheduled with the user and at least one member of our professional staff to educate them on facility policies. This will be documented via email.

The Office of Recreation reserves the right to temporarily suspend the facility privileges of this individual for a brief period of time based on our discretion (typically 1-14 days).

Incident #2: Disciplinary Meeting with Director of Recreation & Temporary Suspension of Facility Privileges

If the recreational user continues non-compliant facility behavior, a second in-person meeting will be held between the user and the Director of Recreation. This will be documented via email.

The Office of Recreation reserves the right to temporarily suspend the facility privileges of this individual for a period of time based on our discretion (typically 7-30 days).

Incident #3: Extended or Permanent Suspension/Revocation of Facility Privileges & Referral to the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards

If, after two in-person meetings, the recreational user continues to ignore facility policies, the Director of Recreation will notify the user via both phone call and email that they have lost facility privileges for a period of time based on our discretion (typically 30 days – Membership Revocation). The Director of Recreation will also refer the series of incidents to the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards.

Disclaimers

Depending on the severity of the offense the Office of Recreation reserves the right to suspend an individual’s facility privileges prior to an in-person meeting.

The Office of Recreation has full discretion to enact an extended suspension or revocation of facility privileges AND/OR refer the student to the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards regardless of whether it’s a first or second offense.

If the offense represents a serious crime (such as theft or assault), the matter may also be referred to the Washington University Police Department.
