Indoor Rec facilities remain closed

Contrary to previously announced plans, the WashU Office of Recreation and University medical officials have decided the Sumers Recreation Center will remain closed indefinitely.

The  University’s COVID-19 Alert Rating is currently at “Orange” and continued high rates of COVID-19 community spread across the St. Louis region made it clear that a continued closure was the prudent decision.

A phased reopening of Sumers will begin only after the University’s COVID Alert System has been downgraded to yellow. While the timeline for reopening is currently unknowable, we will provide updates regarding our return to operations as soon as they become available.

We’ll continue working hard to provide enhanced virtual programming to keep the WashU community active and engaged during our extended closure. This will include virtual BearFit exercise classes, BearFit personal training and intramural sports competitions. Click the link below for more information.

Membership Impact

Below is a list of options available to members as rec facilities remain closed.

  • Membership Extension (Default): We plan on extending all paid memberships by a duration equivalent to the length of time a membership has been in suspense;  however, we’ll also be adding on an additional one-week extension to thank you for your patience and understanding. There is no need to contact us if you’d like a membership extension. This extension will be executed once your membership population regains access to facilities.
  • Prorated Membership Refund If the membership extension will not work for you, we can prorate your refund based on the remaining length of your current membership. Since we do not keep credit card information on file, we will contact you by phone to complete your refund. Please e-mail us at rec@wustl.edu making sure to include your phone number and input “membership refund” in the subject line.
  • Payroll Deduction: Payroll deducted memberships can choose between the membership extension option or a prorated membership cancellation. If you decide to extend your membership and have not yet reached the full deduction total ($200), you will continue to receive payroll deductions until the full deduction total is met. Once your full total is met ($200) you will no longer receive any further deductions. However, your membership will be extended equivalent to the length of the closure when we reopen plus one additional week. If you choose the prorated cancellation option, we will turn-off future deductions and refund you any deductions since our March closure.
Locker Rental Impact

  • Locker Extension (Default): We plan on extending all paid locker rentals by a duration equivalent to the length of our closure;  however, we’ll also be adding on an additional 1-week extension to thank you for your patience and understanding.  There is no need to contact us if you’d like a locker rental extension.  This extension will be executed once we identify a re-opening date for our facilities.
  • Prorated Refund for Length of Closure: If the locker extension will not work for you, we can provide a refund commensurate with the number of days our facilities were closed.  The prorated refund amount will be based on the per-day rate of your current rental.  Since we do not keep credit card information on file, we will contact you by phone to complete your refund.  Please contact us by email with your phone number if this is your preferred choice.
  • Full Locker Refund:  If the rental extension will not work for you, we can prorate your refund based on the remaining length of your current rental. Since we do not keep credit card information on file, we will contact you by phone to complete your refund.  Please contact us by email with your phone number if this is your preferred choice.

Locker Cleanout

Regardless of which option you select, your personal items will remain secure in your locker and you do not have to clean it out at this time, unless you choose to do so. We have set up the following time blocks for those who would like to clear out their lockers.

  • Monday, Aug. 24: 10–11:30 a.m.; 3:30–6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 25: 9–11 a.m.; 3:30–6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 26: 3:30 –6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 27: 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m.

Please email Carly Vanderheyden (cvanderheyden@wustl.edu) to schedule a time to clean out your locker.

We will offer more times in September with the start of the undergraduate semester.  If you are a student that will not return to campus, please contact Carly with your home address.
