Interview Skills

An interview is a conversation where the organization evaluates how your experience, skills, and attitude fit their needs, and you evaluate how well the opportunity matches your values and personal goals. You’ll need to prepare in advance in order to present the most thoughtful and polished version of yourself.

Think of interviews as chances for you to share examples and stories that demonstrate your motivation, not as passive situations where you react to whatever is asked. This Interviewing Skills (PDF) handout can help you prepare. This handout covers researching an organization, what to wear, types of questions asked during interviews, and tips for follow up.

The Career Center also offers advice on best practices for online interviews.

Don’t forget, you can also get interview practice by scheduling a mock interview with a career adviser at the Career Center, or using an online practice tool like Big Interview.

Do you have an upcoming interview and need a quiet place? You may now reserve Career Center Interview Rooms. Rooms can be booked up to a week in advance for five hours at a time. Requests must be submitted at least 24 hours in advance. You know you’re all set once you receive your request confirmation. If you run into any issues, please email Mandy.
