Kawanna Leggett

Kawanna Leggett currently serves as the interim associate vice chancellor and dean of students at Washington University in St. Louis. Before taking on the interim dean of students role, she held the position of executive director of residential life at WashU from March 2017 to June 2020. Prior to her tenure at WashU, Leggett served as the director of residential education at the University of California, Berkeley. She has worked in university housing and student affairs at several institutions including New York University, the College of New Jersey, Clemson University and the University of Arkansas.

In a volunteer capacity, Kawanna has a wide range of association work. In January 2019, Kawanna began a three year term to the executive board of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I).  As the association’s workforce development director, her focus is on the development of opportunities for housing professionals to gain necessary skills and programs that support and retain staff.

Kawanna has presented on a variety of topics including the first-year experience, crisis management, supervision, professional development, performance appraisals, and the new professional experience. She is passionate about mentorship, social justice issues and fostering safe and inclusive living and learning environments.  Kawanna earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Clemson University and graduate degree in higher education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She is currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Missouri- St. Louis.
