Mrs. Harmel has a background in Mental Health Counseling, Student Affairs, Student Development, Public Health, and Alcohol and Other Drugs. She earned her BA in Public Communication from Truman State University and her M.Ed. in Professional Mental Health Counseling from The University of Georgia in 2012. She served as a Residence Hall Director for three years at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse before joining the team in Student Health Services at Washington University in 2015.

As the Assistant Director, Alcohol and Other Drug Programming, Mrs. Harmel oversees the implementation of the online alcohol education program given to all incoming students, provides resources and education in a non-judgmental environment to students around the areas of drug and alcohol use, and serves as the campus BASICS Facilitator and is a certified BASICS Trainer. Mrs. Harmel also runs the WashU Substance Use Recovery Group on campus. During the year, she meets one-on-one with students, provides training and programming to campus groups, and helps advise the Peer Health Educators on topics of Alcohol and Other Drugs.
