Ask an Advisor: Driver’s License Requirements Update

Date: 9/24/2021

Question: Do I still need a driver’s license letter to apply for or renew my driver’s license?

Answer:  No, it is not required anymore. We have recently received news from the Missouri Department of Revenue that the driver’s license letter, or a letter verifying your student status at the university, is no longer a requirement. Therefore, the OISS is no longer be providing driver’s license letters.

View instructions and a list of the documents you will need to apply for a driver’s license. When you go to the license office, they may still ask for the driver’s license letter. If they request a driver’s license letter from your school, please kindly ask them to contact their office in Jefferson City, Missouri.

New students who have recently arrived in St. Louis for this semester and have checked-in with OISS:

Your OISS Advisor will email you confirmation of your check-in and regisitration in SEVIS. Email your OISS Advisor to request your new Continued Attendance I-20. The DMV will not accept an I-20 with the issue reason of Initial or Transfer pending.
PLEASE NOTE: New students MUST complete the OISS New Student Online Check-In Form before they can apply for a driver’s license.

International students who have arrived in St. Louis prior to this semester:

You will need to have your most recent Continued Attendace I-20 to apply for a driver’s license. Look at the Form Issue Reason on Page 1. If your current I-20 does not say Continued Attedance, you will need to email your OISS Advisor to request a new I-20. The DMV will not accept an I-20 with the issue reason of Initial or Transfer pending.

International students who have graduated and have a Pending or Approved OPT Application

Students on OPT must have their OPT card to apply for a new Missouri driver’s license, or to renew an existing driver’s license.

If your OPT application is still pending and you already have a driver’s license, you can apply for a 60-day extension using your OPT I-20 and your OPT Receipt Notice. Then when you receive your OPT Card, you can apply to renew your license.

PLEASE NOTE: If your OPT application is still pending and you want to apply for a new Missouri driver’s license, you must wait until your OPT Card arrives.
