Contrary to previously announced plans, the WashU Office of Recreation and University medical officials have decided the Sumers Recreation Center will remain closed indefinitely.
This decision was reached after many discussions with medical experts over the last few weeks. The University’s COVID-19 Alert Rating is currently at “Orange” and continued high rates of COVID-19 community spread across the St. Louis region made it clear that a continued closure was the prudent decision.
A phased reopening of Sumers will begin only after the University’s COVID Alert System has been downgraded to yellow. While the timeline for reopening is currently unknowable, we will provide updates regarding our return to operations as soon as they become available.
This is disappointing news for many, ourselves included, but our preparations will continue to ensure we’re ready to reopen our facilities and in-person programs when we can safely do so.
We’ll continue working hard to provide enhanced virtual programming to keep the WashU community active and engaged during our extended closure. This will include virtual BearFit exercise classes, BearFit personal training and intramural sports competitions. Click the link below for more information.
